2 Days from Fes: Meknes & Volubilis

For travellers with only a day or two to spare from Fes — the two imperial-era sites within easiest reach, without the longer road to the desert.

Tour highlights

  • Volubilis Roman ruins
  • The holy town of Moulay Idriss
  • Meknes and the Bab Mansour gate
  • The mausoleum of Moulay Ismail
  • The Heri es-Souani granaries

Itinerary

Day 1 — Fes to Volubilis and Meknes

We drive out past the holy town of Moulay Idriss, visible on its hillside from the road, to Volubilis — the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, its mosaic floors still largely in place. From there it's a short hop to Meknes, where we take in the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the vast Heri es-Souani granaries, staying the night in town.

Day 2 — Meknes to Fes

A quieter morning in Meknes before we return to Fes, with time in the afternoon for the medina if you haven't seen it yet.

This route takes in 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Archaeological Site of Volubilis, Historic City of Meknes.
