Itinerary
Day 1 — Fes to Chefchaouen
We leave Fes and drive north through Ouezzane, where the plains give way to the folded hills of the Rif. Chefchaouen appears from a distance as a patch of blue against the mountainside. We settle into the medina in the afternoon and lose an hour or two in its lanes before dinner.
Day 2 — Chefchaouen
A full day on foot: the Ras el Maa spring at the edge of the medina, the Kasbah museum and gardens, and the walk up to the old Spanish Mosque for sunset over the town. In between there is time for the weavers' and leather shops Chefchaouen is known for.
Day 3 — Chefchaouen to Fes via Volubilis and Meknes
Heading south we stop at Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, still with mosaics in place on the villa floors. A short drive on, Meknes gives us the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the monumental Bab Mansour gate before we return to Fes for the night.
Day 4 — Fes
A full day in the medina with a local guide: the tanneries at Chouara, the university and mosque of Al Qarawiyyin, the Bou Inania Madrasa and the souks around them, before a final evening in the old city.
