Fes vs Marrakech: Which Should You Visit First?

· Khalid

Both are imperial cities with UNESCO-listed medinas, and both are genuinely worth seeing — the question we get most often is which to visit first, or start a trip from.

History and atmosphere

Fes is Morocco's spiritual and intellectual capital, home to the Al Qarawiyyin — founded in 859 and recognised as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is one of the largest car-free urban zones anywhere, and the city has a slower, more contemplative feel — a place that rewards getting a little lost.

Marrakech, founded in the 11th century, has a louder, more theatrical energy: the Jemaa el-Fna transforms from market square to open-air food hall every evening, and history and modern life sit side by side rather than one being tucked behind the other.

Architecture and landmarks

Fes leans toward medieval, well-preserved authenticity — the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al Qarawiyyin mosque, workshops that have been passed down through families for generations. Marrakech is bolder and more visual: the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, the Jardin Majorelle, blending Islamic, Berber and Andalusian influences.

Shopping and crafts

Fes is often called Morocco's artisan capital — leatherwork at the Chouara tanneries, ceramics, metalwork, much of it still made in small family workshops. Marrakech's souks are just as extensive but more geared toward browsing and buying, with cooperatives and stalls built around the visitor experience.

Which suits you

If you want a slower, more reflective trip centred on history and craft, start in Fes. If you want energy, food and visual spectacle from the first afternoon, start in Marrakech. Most travellers with more than a week do both — our 3-day route from Fes to Marrakech links them directly via the Sahara, so you're not choosing one over the other. Tell us which appeals more and we'll help you plan the order.

This article touches on 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Medina of Fez, Medina of Marrakesh.
